After a three-year process, the formation of THE LACKAWAXEN TOWNSHIP FIRE COMMISSION was established in May 2009, with a resolution passed by the Township Supervisors in June 2009 approving the Fire Commission.
It is our vision that we will be able to enhance the overall level of Fire and Rescue protection to citizens, the safety of volunteers and level of volunteerism in our township. The commission will address all issues related to; administration, utilization of assets, fund raising, training and equipment.
The mission of the Lackawaxen Township Fire Commission is committed to working in partnership with all four (4) volunteer fire departments in lackawaxen Township to continue to provide dependable and efficient fore protection to residents and businesses.
The Commission Consist of one member from each of the four Fire Departments, Central, Forest, Greeley and Lackawaxen, one delegate chosen by each of the four departments who is not involved with Emergency services, one Township Supervisor, one delegate chosen bye the supervisors not involved in Emergency services and lastly on delegate chosen by both the Fire Departments and the Supervisors together for a total of eleven representatives.
Former Lackawaxen Township Supervisor Fred Gelderman (who retired on Dec. 31, 2009, said “We are very excited to see this program finally become a reality and to get the four fore departments to look at the benefits that they all will be able to share in with this partnership/regionalization program.” With volunteerism at an all time low, Gelderman, who has served as a volunteer since 1960, volunteer, stated, “Something has to be done to help what remaining volunteers we have left. I feel that people don’t understand what could happen if we lose our volunteer organizations and we have to pay for these services. Instead of a couple hundred thousand dollars in tax monies, it would cost several million dollars in tax monies, and that would come out of the pockets of you, me and every resident of the great township.”
